On October 29, YCIS Chongqing held our first annual ‘Gimjang’ a Kimchi making event. Members of the school’s staff and volunteers from the Korean community met at 10am to participate in the annual autumn tradition of preparing Kimchi (Korean style pickled cabbage).
The Korean mothers provided an excellent demonstration on Kimchi making and then proceeded to guide staff members through the process of ‘dressing’, wrapping and packing their freshly made Kimchi. Each staff member was able to bring home two containers of the kimchi they prepared and were treated to a delicious lunch of Bossam (pork), Kimchi-Jan (savory Kimchi pancakes) fresh kimchi and rice.
We hope to make this event an annual tradition at YCIS Chongqing and to extend the idea to create opportunities for this sort of food and culture sharing with other groups in the school community.
