‘Diversity is the one true thing we all have in common… Celebrate it every day.’
-Winston Churchill
We might be from the same country, city or family, but we are all different, some of those differences could be small while others could be large, our Celebrating Differences Day is an opportunity to recognise that we are all different and celebrate everyone’s uniqueness.
Peer pressure can keep our children from feeling that it is okay for them to be different. They may be different in the way they dress, the types of friends they choose, how they speak, the music they like, etc. Celebrating Differences Day is an opportunity for our whole school community to support our students in accepting, respecting and valuing everyone’s differences.
On Friday our students participated in an array of different learning opportunities to gain a greater understanding of people’s differences and why we should embrace that everyone is different. In ECE and Primary, the students participated in a Life Skills lesson that was focused on differences. Secondary spent time in ‘Extended Form’ to gain a greater understanding of specific learning needs, making and sharing presentations.
In the afternoon, students worked on preparing speeches on the different types of differences that exist in the world today, the day came to a conclusion with a ‘public speaking contest’ with the students voting on who made the most compelling speeches.
As Dr. Seuss said, “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” It’s okay to be different! We are all unique so let’s celebrate our uniqueness together!
