On March 30 and 31, 14 YCIS students attended the NHSDLC debate tournament. The NHSDLC run public forum debate competitions in most of China’s major cities and have connections with debate leagues in the USA and Canada. The topic for this round was “Resolved: Countries should prioritise climate change adaptation over mitigation.” This topic allowed for students to link in previous work with the sustainability council and to expand their horizons as global citizens.
This is the third time that YCIS students have taken part in an NHSDLC competition in Chongqing. This has allowed for experienced students to pass down their knowledge to new participants and advise them on the expectations for success. As a result the YCIS Chongqing debate team has gone from strength to strength. The 2019 tournament was the most competitive so far with students flying in from Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen to compete alongside students representing various local school. However, 10 out of the 14 participants made it to the finals on the 31st and in the end it was 2 YCIS teams which made it to the finals to compete for the championship.
We are very proud of all of the students who took part and hope that there will be many more students joining in for the Autumn 2019 tournament.
